Initiative 1634 – Prohibit Local Taxes on Groceries

The League of Women Voters has not taken a position on this Initiative.

However, there are a couple facts you should know in order to make an informed choice:

  • This is not truly an effort to ensure affordable groceries. It is a direct result of the City of Seattle’s implementation of a tax on sugary drinks and this initiative is funded by Big Soda in order to prevent similar taxes elsewhere in the state.
  • Voting for this initiative could prevent Counties and Cities from enacting other kinds of local taxes on specific products in the future, thus inhibiting local government action and flexibility.

Voting NO opposes this Initiative. Voting YES supports it.
