On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas with news of freedom from slavery, nearly two years after President Lincoln emancipated African slaves. More than 250,000 African Americans in Texas celebrated their freedom in what became known as Juneteenth or Freedom Day.
Although it has long been celebrated in the African American community, this monumental event remains largely unknown to most Americans. Juneteenth marks our country’s second independence day, yet it has always been more than a holiday. It stands as a testament to and celebration of the unyielding spirit and resilience of a people.
Juneteenth shows the value of never giving up hope in uncertain times. It serves as a reminder of the struggles and triumphs in the fight for freedom and a day to commemorate African American cultural heritage.
Join in the celebration of Juneteenth as a significant independence day while recognizing that we still have work to do to ensure all Americans, especially those of color, are treated equally in education, healthcare, the workplace, in the justice system and more.
