Sadly, in the last few years, prejudice against others perceived as “different” has skyrocketed. This prejudice comes in the form of racism, homophobia, misogyny, transphobia, xenophobia, ageism and ableism, just to name a few. It’s important that we – as a society – attempt to learn more about all the “-phobias and -isms”. Perhaps then, instead of dismissal, fear, and hatred we can learn acceptance and empathy.
With Transgender Day of Visibility just behind us and Pride Month in June, let’s focus on the people honored by those days and the struggles they face. Even the basic human need to use a restroom has become a national fight. Right now, there are multiple bills and laws being put forth in states, as well as our federal government, that only perpetuate prejudice and unacceptance and will serve to remove or restrict normal human rights.
Trans and LGTBQ+ people are human beings, just like everyone else. Just like every person born on this earth, they were born as they are. No one has a choice in that – be it the color of their eyes or hair, or their sexuality/gender. Their parents can’t decide either – babies aren’t a customizable item!
To consider anyone “less” because they don’t fit into a tiny, antiquated mold, only makes us look foolish. By showing prejudice, we only make what can be a hard life harder for others. No one needs ignorance, cruelty and hatred added to their reality. Clinging to outdated, anti-scientific beliefs because they feel comfortable is a choice. Instead of clinging to prejudice and marginalizing those different from ourselves, making the choice and taking the time to try to understand their lives and struggles would be a faster path to equality for everyone and to becoming a more welcoming, caring person.
You may think that this is not an issue you care about, but if the rights are removed from this group, they can be removed from any group. We cannot sit idly by and let human rights be degraded due to ignorance. The LGTBQIA+ community deserves to live their lives in peace without interference from others – especially our government. This quote sums it up:
“Here’s the truth: neutrality in the face of cruelty is cowardice dressed up as politeness”. – John Hinds.
Don’t stay neutral. Drop the prejudice and allow us all to live in peace.
