Today is Women’s Equality Day, and though this day celebrates passage of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote, it also reminds us that women still are not equal to men.

Here’s an article published in 2015 in Marie Claire that reminds us of 14 ways women still aren’t equal to men (fully sourced, if you roll your eyes at Marie Claire).

And while we’re thinking of women’s equality, remember that women of color continue to struggle to get access to the voting booth. Read this article if you doubt that statement.

The League of Women Voters, which was instrumental in getting the 19th Amendment passed, has thoughtfully considered its own past when it comes to women of color and vowed to do better.

Chris Carson, president of the League, said this in a statement issued earlier this month:

“On Sunday, The New York Times ran an op-ed titled, How the Suffrage Movement Betrayed Black Women. The League is not mentioned by name in this piece, but we should have been. Our founders and early leaders were not inclusive of all women. African Americans were excluded through much of our history.  We have submitted a letter to the editor to the Times addressing our place in this history. These are hard truths to face but an important part of our story that we will continue to address as we approach our 100th Anniversary.

The national office has renewed our commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Going forward, every League Update will now have a DEI section where we share tools, articles, and updates that address our commitment.”

And so the work continues.
