I cannot tell you how many times I have heard this phrase when talking with people about our government, current elections, or decisions being made. Each time, an effort is made to educate and encourage people to get involved in their government, elections and policies being built. One does not have to be “political” to be stay engaged, aware and informed on laws and changes that may/will affect them and those they love. It is not always prudent to silo oneself by always accepting any one party’s ideas or platform without question – keeping an open and informed mind is the better path.
Many times, it is younger people that become disengaged from what is happening in our local, state and federal government. Often this is because they don’t feel represented or listened to or figure their thoughts and votes don’t matter. They look at the people elected to represent them, and do not see themselves. Also, this can be a very busy time as young people are building and developing their own lives, jobs and families. However, there is real danger in not paying attention or learning what is happening in government. Especially in these times of division, mis/disinformation, and threats, it is no longer safe or good enough to ignore what is happening in our country and the world.
It can be virtually impossible to be thoroughly knowledgeable about every issue and law that is being challenged or developed. Instead of throwing up our hands and giving up, perhaps choosing issues that matter most to you and spending your time and energy reading and studying them? This is not to say that it makes sense to be a “one issue” voter, as that has its own inherent dangers, but avoiding or ignoring what happens in government altogether serves no one.
The League of Women Voters first priorities have always been to empower voters and defend our democracy. Educational programs are held several times a year for the public and we do our best to hold candidate forums, study and publish information on issues up for vote. Although we are non-partisan, meaning we do not recommend any person running for any office, we do keep our eyes on any issues, laws or changes that affect the rights and freedoms of all people. We are always ready to hear what YOU think, what matters to you and help anyone become more involved and engaged. If there are educational programs of interest to you, or questions you have about how our governments work, please check out our website and social media platforms. We are here to advocate for everyone. If you would like to suggesta program or have questions, we can also be reached at info@kittitasleague.org or by mail at PO Box 331, Ellensburg, WA 98926.
