Bills needing your action this week

ELECTION LEGISLATION

HB 1485 Recognizing Women’s Suffrage Day as a legal holiday.

This bill designates March 22 to be a state legal holiday. On March 22, 1920, Washington became the 35th state to ratify the amendment that prohibited the denial of the right to vote on the basis of sex. Bill is scheduled for a hearing in the House State Government and Tribal Relations Committee on January 10th at 1:30PM. The LWV supports passage of this bill. Please sign in to support passage here.

HB 1652 Concerning conservation district elections

This bill would make changes to the election process to increase public engagement and voter participation by allowing conservation districts to choose election process in conformance with Title 29A RCW (essentially, turn over conservation district elections to the county auditor). This bill is scheduled for a hearing in the House State Government and Tribal Relations Committee on January 12th at 8:00AM. The LWV supports passage of this bill. EDUCATION LEGISLATION

HB 1630 Establishing restrictions on possession of weapons in certain locations.

This bill makes it unlawful to carry a firearm onto facilities being used for official meetings of a school district board of directors. This would also apply to city, town, county and other municipality buildings being used for public meetings. Public meetings need to be safe for elected officials, community members and students. The bill will be heard in the House Civil Rights and Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, January 12th at 10 am. The LWV supports passage of this bill. HB 1664 Concerning prototypical school formulas for physical, social, and emotional support in schools

This bill adds additional nurses to the prototypical school funding model. This will help somewhat with students’ mental and emotional needs.
